To the last day of The Mystery of Appearance exhibition of post-War British painters including Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Patrick Caulfield, William Coldstream, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Leon Kossoff and Euan Uglow (see note on site on Bacon’ credentials). Highlights were Michael Andrews (The Thames at Low Tide; The Lord Mayor’s Reception); Frank Auerbach (Study of Primrose Hill); Francis Bacon (Pope I); William Coldstream (Seated Nude); Lucian Freud (Portrait of a Woman [Portrait of Lady Ann Tree]); Richard Hamilton (Mother and Child; Retrospective); David Hockney (John St. Clair; Man in a Museum); Leon Kossoff (Nude [Autumn Morning]) and Euan Uglow (Nude, Lady C; Massacre of the Innocents; Mosque at Çiftlik Köyü).
I didn’t note anything by Patrick Caulfield, though he stood out for his more graphic representations. The refurbished Haunch of Venison is lovely. Entrance now in New Bond Street, though all-too-easy to miss.
